With baseball and softball’s upcoming return to the Olympic stage in 2020, countries in Africa — and around the world – are boosting their activities and strategies to be a part of the Tokyo 2020 Games.
The Zimbabwe Softball Association (ZISA) has big plans for the month of March, including an Annual General Meeting on the 10th.
The ZISA will also host various national and international competitions – from youth to college-level — boosting the development of softball for the nation and entire African continent.
From 23-24 March, the ZISA will stage an international college competition between Zimbabwe and Botswana Tertiary Institutes in Harare. An estimated 15 men’s and women’s teams from the two countries will play in the friendlies.
Also on 24 March, the Schools Softball Open Invitational Youth Boys and Girls Championships will be played at the U-12, U-14, U-16, and U-20 levels. ZISA will use the events to form its Junior National Teams.
In the Harare Province, nearly 30 high schools will compete in a 50-game softball season that starts on 9 March and runs to May.
The Zimbabwe Women’s National Team recently played in January the WBSC Women’s Softball World Championship Africa Qualifier in Pretoria, South Africa. The young team of Zimbabwe topped Lesotho, 15-8, to claim 3rd Place in the four-nation continental championship. Zimbabwe competed in Pretoria after a nine-year absence from national team events.
