New baseball-softball federation established in Bulgaria following merger

The two governing bodies had split in 1998. Youri Alkalay has been named the president of the newly established Bulgarian Baseball and Softball Federation.

SOFIA, Bulgaria -- The baseball and softball federations in Bulgaria have joined forces, merging into the newly established Bulgarian Baseball and Softball Federation (BBSF). Youri Alkalay has been elected to a two-year term as the body's first president.

Eight Vice Presidents form the BBSF's Executive Board: Yasen Nedelchev, Gergana Handjiyska, Yavor Andreev, Ilian Dragoev, Georgi Lachev, Lyudmil Trenev, Nykolav Pilev and Stefan Beshkov.

Baseball and softball were introduced into Bulgaria at the end of the 1980s. The initial Bulgarian Baseball and Softball Federation was established in 1988, before splitting in 1998.

The first official national baseball championship was played in 1992, while the first softball championship followed a year later in 1993.

Bulgaria has successfully introduced Baseball5. The National Team is currently the Balkan Champion.

Bulgaria is currently ranked 57th in the WBSC Men's Baseball World Rankings and 56th in WBSC Women's Softball World Rankings.
