Baseball set to resume in Nicaragua with First Division Championship

The season was suspended on 17 May amid the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. The majority of the teams want to play behind closed doors.

The First Division Baseball Championship will resume play in Managua, Nicaragua, on Friday, 26 June. The league has been suspended since 17 May amid the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.

San Fernando, Matagalpa and Jinotega will play a three-team tournament to earn the last spot in the postseason. The three teams were locked in a tie when the season was suspended. The winner will face Boer in the quarter-finals, which is a best-of-five series.

The other three quarter-finals will see Esteli face Chontales, Dantos play Nueva Segovia and Costa Caribe face Chinandega.

The semi-finals and the final will be best-of-seven series.

League Commissioner Carlos Reyes Sarmientos told Laprensa.com that he believes the games will be played behind closed doors: "It's not a final decision, but it's the position of the majority of the teams."

During the suspension, fans have had a chance to celebrate once again the historic perfect game by El Presidente Dennis Martinez.
