Baseball5 shines in Argentina as 5-on-5 discipline lands in Salta province

Over the weekend, four workshops were held in Salta and Oran, including two demonstrations in youth correctional institutions, where inmates got familiar with the rules and basics of the game and enjoyed it.

Baseball5's footprint and social impact continues expanding globally as the five-on-five, urban discipline successfully landed in Salta, a northern province in Argentina. Victor Aramayo, one of the WBSC trainers during the Baseball5 demonstration at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games, headed to the north of Argentina to introduce Baseball5 in Salta province, an area with a long baseball tradition, with the namesake capital city as one of the top baseball cities in the country.

On 14 January, Baseball5 was officially launched in the province at Delmi Stadium, the biggest arena in the capital city of Salta. A total of eight teams played a tournament representing local baseball teams. Two groups of four teams played 15 games in three hours, with around 100 people playing and witnessing the event. Provincial sports authorities, local media outlets and baseball fans were present in the stadium.

On 15 January, a pair of activities were held in Oran, a city of 82,000 located 270 kilometres north of Salta, near to the border with Bolivia. In the morning, 12 inmates at a youth correctional facility played Baseball5 for an hour, demonstrating the game's potential and utility for rehabilitation.

In the afternoon, a Baseball5 workshop was held with more than 10 teachers from Oran and Pichanal, aiming to develop Baseball5 across the Province of Salta by teaching the rules and fundamentals of the game to local professors, who could help spread and teach the game.

The experience with inmates was repeated on 16 January in Salta city, where 32 boys of a the youth correctional institution had their first experience of Baseball5. Boys from 14 to 17 years old played for an hour, interacting in a healthy way and learning the rules of the game. Officers and leaders of the penitentiary were impressed by the success of the activity and are planning to organise an internal Baseball5 tournament in the coming weeks.
