PULLY, Switzerland; 16 November 2020 -- The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) welcomes the news of Kim Ng’s hiring as the new General Manager of the Miami Marlins of Major League Baseball (MLB).

Ng, who was an MVP softball infielder while at the University of Chicago and a current member of the USA Softball Board of Directors, is the first woman hired to the general manager position by any of the professional men's sports teams in the North American Major Leagues.

“Major League Baseball is one of the most iconic sports leagues in the world, and Kim Ng’s historic hiring into this leadership role with the Miami Marlins helps further break the glass ceiling for females in sports, and this merited breakthrough will echo around the world,” said WBSC Secretary General and Integrity Unit chair, Ms Beng Choo Low.

Ng’s career in professional baseball spans over 30 years: Chicago White Sox 1990-1996; NY Yankees 1998-2001; Los Angeles Dodgers 2002-2011; and MLB Commissioner’s Office 2011-2020.

Following her appointment, Ng said in a statement: "I entered Major League Baseball as an intern, and after decades of determination, it is the honor of my career to lead the Miami Marlins as their next general manager."

MLB Commissioner Robert D. Manfred commented: "All of us at Major League Baseball are thrilled for Kim and the opportunity she has earned with the Marlins. Kim’s appointment makes history in all of professional sports and sets a significant example for the millions of women and girls who love baseball and softball."
