Canada, USA remain undefeated after Day 3 in Edmonton

Edmonton (Canada). Three days are in the books at the V IBAF Women’s Baseball World Cup in Edmonton, Canada. Team USA won one of the most anticipated games of the first round, when they beat defending champion Japan on Sunday evening. The US squad will face Canada in a matchup of undefeated teams on Monday. The Maple Leafs beat Australia in a close match. Also Venezuela and Chinese Taipei celebrated victories to keep their medal round hopes alive.

The Maple Leafs beat Australia in a close match. Also Venezuela and Chinese Taipei celebrated victories to keep their medal round hopes alive.

Chinese Taipei 17 – Netherlands 3

Chinese Taipei had no trouble to defeat the Netherlands 17-3 in five innings to start day three at the Women’s Baseball World Cup in Edmonton. They scored 16 of their 17 runs in the first three frames. Hsiao Mei Chen earned player of the game honors, going 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBI. It was their second win in three games at the tournament. The Dutch scored their first runs of the event, but still lost for the third time.

Cuba 5 – Venezuela 11

Settling in Edmonton, Canada Venezuela found a way to beat Cuba 11-5 in the first contest at Bob White Field in John Fry Park on Sunday afternoon. They scored in each of the first six innings. Ofelia Arrieche led off by reaching base five times and crossing the plate for four runs. It was the first victory for Venezuela in their second game. Cuba dropped to 0-3 in the tournament.

Canada 5 – Australia 4

In an exciting afternoon affair at Telus Field, host Canada captured their third win in as many games, edging out Australia 5-4. The game was decided in the sixth inning thanks to a RBI triple by Rebecca Hartley, who later scored also the fifth Canadian run. The Aussies were up 3-1 at one point and tried to rally in the ninth, but stranded a runner on second. It was their second loss in three games.

USA 5 – Japan 2

In a potential medal round prelude Team USA bested defending Women’s Baseball World Champion Japan 5-2 on Sunday evening at Telus Field in Edmonton, Canada. Tamara Holmes led the American offense with three extra base hits, breaking the tie in the fourth. Japan had three professional players in their starting lineup, but couldn’t do much against the pitching of Donna Williams and Jennifer Hunter.
