Canada, USA remain undefeated in Lima 2019 Women’s Softball event

Sara Groenewegen pitched a five-inning perfect game to lead Canada to the second win in a row in the Pan American Games. USA is the other undefeated team in the tournament, after a 6-0 win over Puerto Rico. Mexico earned its first victory in Lima defeating the host team by a score of 9-0.

Canada defeated Venezuela, 8-0, in five innings of play. The winning team got another strong pitching performance, this time from Groenewegen who threw a perfect game, retiring all 15 batters she faced and striking out 10 of them. Three multiple run innings earned Canada the win on the run rule. Maria Gomez was charged with the loss for Venezuela.

USA also clinched the second win of the continental Games over Puerto Rico by a score of 6-0. Kristy Merrit and Delaney Spaulding homered for USA, while Haylie McCleney, Ali Aguilar and Valerie Arioto combined for 7 hits and 3 runs in the top three spots of the lineup. Left-handed pitcher Cat Osterman grabbed the win after 6 innings and 13 strikeouts, allowing only 2 hits. The loss was charged to Meghan King.

Mexican catcher Sashel Palacios hit a grand slam in the fourth inning, leading a 9-0 victory over host Peru. From the circle Dallas Escobedo fanned 11 batters in five innings of work, allowing only 1 hit. It was the first win for Mexico in the Pan American Games.
