The Canberra Cavalry have won the 2013 Australian Baseball League. In the championship series this weekend they swept defending champion Perth Heat 2-0 (6-4, 7-6) to win the Claxton Shield for the first time.

19-year-old Canberra native Aaron Sloan was named Most Valuable Player of the Final Series, going 5-for-8 with a home run this weekend. On Friday the Cavalry had won 6-4, scoring six quick runs en route to the win. Game two one day later turned out to be a nail biter, as veteran Michael Wells hit a tie-breaking home run in the seventh inning to seal a 7-6 victory.

Canberra had reached the final series by finishing the regular season in first place. Perth had to face the Sydney Blue Sox in the preliminary final to determine the second finalist. The Heat didn’t waste any time to return to the championship series, sweeping the Blue Sox.
