Another 11,000 plus fans witnessed Chinese Taipei securing the spot in 2019 WBSC Premier12 Super Round as Chinese Taipei defeated Venezuela, 3-0, at Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium.

TAICHUNG, Taiwan -- Chinese Taipei sent Nippon Professional Baseball Orix Buffaloes rookie sensation Yi Chang to the mound to face Venezuela in Group B action of the WBSC Premier12.

Chang, who recently converted to a pitcher this season, threw seven scoreless innings to help Chinese Taipei claim their second victory of the global tournament.

The win guaranteed Chinese Taipei a spot in this year’s Super Round starting November 11 in Tokyo, Japan.

Chinese Taipei started the game with two consecutive hits in the first inning but failed to score when Venezuela turned a double play to end the inning. In the fourth, Chinese Taipei had runners in scoring position but Venezuela reliever Argenis Angulo struck out pinch hitter Lin, Che-Hsuan to end the threat.

In the top of the seventh Chinese Taipei pinch hitter Chu, Yu-Hsien beat the shift to hit a RBI double to put Chinese Taipei on the scoreboard. Wei-Chen Wang followed with a double that knocked in second run to give Chinese Taipei a 2-0 lead. Chinese Taipei added another run on the top of the ninth and maintained the lead to win the game 3-0.

“He pitched an exceptional game, and he was the key that Chinese Taipei defeated us."

"You’ve gotta tip your cap to him, he deserves all the credit,” said Venezuela manger Carlos Subero.

Chinese Taipei manager I-Chung Hong also praised Chang’s performance. Chang said, “It was my first outing in my career to pitch seven innings. It was unbelievable.”

“I I hear the fans cheering.” Chu, Yu-Hsien, whose clutch hit brought in the first run for Chinese Taipei, dedicated the game to his wife, “our daughter was born at 7 this morning, and I want to thank her.”

“I am glad that I was able to deliver in my first plate appearance in my first international game.”

Chinese Taipei now holds a 2-0 record and will meet with Japan, who is also 2-0, in the final day of the Group B opening round. The Chinese Taipei – Japan game will decide the winner of Group B.
