Day 4 Historical Preview: Tokyo 2020 Olympic Softball tournament

The six-team Tokyo 2020 Olympic softball tournament continue with three games on Sunday, 25 July: AUS v USA; CAN v JPN; and ITA v MEX.

Australia - United States

  • Australia and United States met at each of the past three world championships. USA won all four games at those three events, including an 8-1 victory in the final eliminator in 2014.
  • Australia won both of their first two Olympic games against United States, but have lost all five since by an aggregate score of 24-1.
  • Australia and Japan (both 2) are the only teams to record multiple victories versus United States at the Olympic Games.
  • Australia beat United States 2-1 in the group stage of the Olympic Games in 2000. The teams met again later in that tournament in the final eliminator. USA won 1-0 to progress to the gold medal match (won against Japan), while Australia took bronze for the second successive Games.
  • United States recorded three wins out of three versus Australia at the Olympic Games in 2004: 10-0 in the group stage, 5-0 in the semi-finals and 5-1 in the gold medal match.
  • United States defeated Australia 3-0 in the group stage of the Olympic Games in 2008.
  • Australia lost the first match 8-1 to Japan in their 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games opener. followed by a 1-0 win against Italy and a 7-1 loss against Canada.
  • Haylie McCleney (.667) has the highest batting average of all players on multiple hits at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.


Canada - Japan

  • Canada and Japan have met at each of the past five world championships (2010-2018). Japan won all seven games across those five competitions, including three final eliminators (12-3 in 2010, 11-1 in 2016 and 3-0 in 2018).
  • Canada and Japan met in the group stage of all four Olympic Games softball was on the programme. Canada won one of those four games, 1-0 in 2004 (in the eighth inning).
  • Japan's three Olympic wins against Canada were 4-0 in 1996, 4-3 in 2000 and 6-0 in 2008.
  • Japan recorded four of the six home runs in the Tokyo 2020 softball tournament. Yamato Fujita (3) and Yu Yamamoto (2) are the only players to record multiple home runs at the 2020 Olympic Games.
  • Canada have drawn 16 walks at the Tokyo tournament, at least nine more than any other team.
  • Erika Polidori (2) is the only player on multiple stolen bases at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.


Italy - Mexico

  • Mexico recorded a 1-0 win versus Italy in the elimination quarter-finals of the world championship in 2018. The game went nine inning.
  • Italy defeated Mexico 6-0 in the first round of the world championships in 2012. Neither team progressed to the playoffs.
  • Mexico and Italy are the bottom two teams in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic softball event, both still in search of their first win.
  • Italy is the only team without a single run scored at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games (0-8).
