After stranding a couple of runs in scoring position in the top of the first, Mexico took the lead in the top of the third thanks to speedy centre fielder Madelyn Ruffin, whos tole third and made the most of a sacrifice fly to shallow left field. Mexico failed to extend the lead on a double to the gap in left centre by first baseman Saleen Donoe. Designated player Desiree Hernandez tried to score from first but became the third out at home.

Puerto Rico took the lead in the bottom half of the frame. Left fielder Tatiana Roman , shortstop Aminah Vega and centre fielder Victoria Figueroa all singled off Mexico’s starter Yeraldine Carrion.
