Eight years ago today: Japan wins V WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup

Right-handed pitcher Yukari Isozaki was the hero of the tournament as she pitched back-to-back complete games in the semifinal against Australia and in the final against the United States

Japan shut out the United States, 3-0, on 19 August 2012 at Telus Field in Edmonton, Canada, to win the fifth WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup. It was the third straight win for Madonna Japan.

Yukari Isozaki threw a complete game for Japan, allowing seven hits and two walks while striking out four.

Isozaki earned well deserved MVP honours. The 21-year-old right-hander had pitched a complete game just the day before, allowing only a run on eight hits, in the semifinal against Australia.

Japan suffered during the opening round the only loss of the tournament, 5-2, on 13 August against the United States. Canada finished third and earned a bronze medal.

The inaugural Women's Baseball World Cup was played in 2004 in Canada. The United States won in 2004 and 2006. In both cases, Japan finished second. Madonna Japan then went on to win six consecutive World Cups.
