Enrique Alcaraz, WBSC Softball Hall of Famer from Argentina, passes away at 75

The Argentine leader was Vice President of both the WBSC Softball Americas and his country’s national federation.

Enrique Alcaraz, long-time international softball leader who dedicated his life to promoting and developing the sport in South America and across the Americas, passed away on Wednesday at his hometown, Bahia Blanca, in Argentina. He was 75-years-old.

Alcaraz, affectionately known as “Cacho” by his friends, was born in Argentina on 9 January 1945 and became one of the main leaders in Argentine softball. He was inducted into the WBSC Softball Hall of Fame in 2013, along with coach Eduardo Sabate, joining Fernando Aren as the only three Argentine Softball Hall of Famers at that time. He received his ring and plaque on home soil, during the Men’s Softball Pan American Championship 2014 in Parana, Argentina.

“We lost an irreplaceable leader, one of the pillars of the Pan American softball leadership over the last few recent decades, but mainly we have lost a great friend and an excellent human being,” said Tommy Velazquez, WBSC Softball Chairman. “Cacho was a guide for everyone, a person who has passed on indelible teachings and memories, and who will be remembered for his legacy. My sincere condolences to his family, friends, and to the entire Argentine softball community. "

Alcaraz represented his country at the International Softball Federation (ISF) Congress for the first time in 1995 and was a permanent presence at each session until 2015. In 1998, he was elected Vice President of the South American Softball Confederation (CONSURSA, Confederación Sudamericana de Softbol), and three years later he became its president. In addition, he served the Pan American Softball Confederation (CONPASA; Confederación Panamericana de Softbol, since renamed WBSC Softball Americas) from 2000 until his death.

Alcaraz is survived by his wife, Susana, daughter Luciana and son Lucas.
