Europe: Softball Champions crowned in Bulgaria, Croatia, Ukraine. Neunkirchen wins German Cup

National champions were crowned across Europe following a late start to the season due to COVID-19.

National softball champions were crowned across Europe last weekend, with tournaments finishing in four different countries. Bulgaria and Croatia closed their national championships, while Germany and Ukraine concluded their national cup tournaments.

Sofia Akademichki takes 12th Bulgarian title

Sofia Akademichki swept the Dupnista Angels in the best-of-five Bulgarian National Women's Softball Championship Series. Akademichki topped the defending champions, 4-1, 11-4, and 12-11, to capture their league-leading 12th national title.

Princ, Medvenica keep Croatian Crown

In Croatia, the 2020 men's and women's softball season came to an end. Princ Zagreb claimed the women's national softball title, while the men's Medvednica Bears were crowned national championship.

Princ needed four games of the best-of-five series to repeat as champions. The defending champions took the first two of the series, 7-0 and 12-2, while Medvednicom grabbed the third game, 9-6. Princ clinched the title winning the fourth game, 9-1. Rita Despot from Medvednica was the best hitter of the championship, while best pitcher and MVP awards went to Michaela Haramini, from Princ.

In the men’s final, Medvenica beat the Giants, 8-2, in the fifth game of the final series to clinch the Croatian title for the fifth year in a row. Christian Belas from Span was the best hitter of the championship. The best pitcher was Bruno Kukolja from the Giants, while the MVP of the championship was Matija Balent from Medvednica.

Neunkirchen Nightmares claims German Cup

The Neunkirchen Nightmares won the Deutschlandpokal Softball 2020, the German Softball Bundesliga Cup. They defeated the Freising Grizzlies two games to one in the best-of-three final. After splitting the first two games of the series, the Nightmares scored two runs in the top of the seventh for a 3-1 win that put their name on the cup.

The Deutschlandpokal Softball was played alongside the playoffs of the German Softball- Bundesliga. Neunkirchen beat the Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg, the Karlsruhe Cougars and the Bonn Capitals en route to the finals. Freising hosted the final series after losing the German Softball-Bundesliga final series three games to none against the Wesseling Vermins.

Occidental Fire win Ukrainian softball cup

The Occidental Fire topped OSDYUSHOR-OSHVSM in the championship game of the Ukrainian Softball Cup, 5-1, to win the national crown. The teams met in the first semifinal, with OSDYUSHOR-OSHVSM winning, 3-0, to advance directly to the final. The Fire had to defeat Nika, 13-11, in the second semifinal the set the rematch.
