GameTime Classics episode 24: Watch Japan, Greece collide at 2006 Women’s Softball World Championship
Japan and Greece opened Day 3 of the 2006 Women’s Softball World Championship in a rematch of the round robin game from the Athens Olympic Games.
The 2006 Women’s Softball National Teams of Japan and Greece are showcased in the latest episode of the GameTime Classics series. Both teams faced off in the 2006 Women’s Softball World Championship held in Beijing, China, in an event that also served as a qualifier for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
Japan and Greece opened Day 3 of the 2006 Women’s Softball World Championship in a rematch of the Athens Olympic Games round robin game. Japan had a 2:0 win:loss record in Group B, while Greece arrived at 1:1.
The game was played Tuesday, August 29 2006 at the newly inaugurated Fengtai Softball Field - the venue for softball at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
Two years before, both teams faced off in the Opening Round of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, with Japan winning 6-0.
Greece was trying to finish in the top four of the tournament to earn a spot in the 2008 Summer Olympics, while Japan was building a team which went on to claim gold at Beijing 2008.
