Global Sport: New baseball/softball field to be built in Quito, Ecuador

The venue will be located in San José de Morán, a neighbourhood in northern Quito.

Baseball/softball growth around the globe is not stopping amid the pandemic. The construction of a new baseball/softball field has began in Quito, Ecuador. The project aims to boost baseball and softball in the country. It will be the first dedicated baseball/softball field in the city with a population of 2.7 million.

The Pichincha Baseball Association, together with the Provincial Softball Commission, began the construction of the field in a 10,000 sq mt area to build a regulation baseball field and some complementary services.

The first phase of this project includes the removal and flattening of the land. The dugouts, dressing rooms, batting cages, bullpens, bleachers and parking lots will be built in phase two. The total cost of construction is estimated at $800,000 US dollars.

In the upcoming months, the authorities are planning to launch a baseball/softball initiation for school kids.

Ecuador is currently ranked 80th in the WBSC Baseball World Rankings, and 35th in the WBSC Women’s Softball World Ranking, and 47th in the WBSC Men’s Softball World Ranking.
