Granma wins 60th Cuban National Baseball Series in six games

Slugger Guillermo Garcia earned MVP honours. WBSC's Game Time video streaming channel enjoyed its highest viewership numbers.

Granma defeated the defending champions Matanzas, 6-5, in game 6 of the final series to win the 60th edition of the Cuban National Baseball Series (Serie Nacional). It's the third title for Granma in the last five seasons of Cuba's top-tier baseball league.

The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, tweeted his congratulations to the team:

"Granma is the champion of Cuban baseball," he said.

  • Game 4: Granma-Matanzas 15-5
  • Game 5: Matanzas-Granma 4-3

Guillermo Garcia, a 20-year old designated hitter, went 4-for-4 in game 6 and batted in Granma's winning run in the ninth. He earned series MVP honours, recording a .487 batting average, 4 home runs and 17 runs batted in.

"This is the greatest accomplishment of my life," Garcia said after the game.

Granma starter Leandro Martinez went 5.1 innings, while reliever Joel Mojena recorded the final three outs.

WBSC's GameTime.Sport platform was awarded the international broadcasting rights of the Cuban National League, and the six-game series represents GameTime's largest viewership numbers. The series on GameTime generated over 1.1 million views on YouTube, with 222k unique viewers, while GameTime's Facebook page generated over 1.4 million minutes of watch time.
