Hill’s two-run homer helps Canada remain unbeaten. Argentina tops Cuba

A 2-run homer by Jason Hill in the bottom of the second inning was all the offense Canada needed to win a key match against Venezuela in Group B, in the fight for the top spot of the standings. Argentina scored three runs in the first two innings of play to clinch an important victory, 3-2, over Cuba

A 2-run homer by Jason Hill in the bottom of the second inning was all the offense Canada needed to win a key match against Venezuela in Group B, in the fight for the top spot of the standings. Devon McCullough went the distance for Canada allowing only 4 hits and 1 run, with 13 strikeouts. Canada is now the only team undefeated in Group B.

In the bottom of the second Hill smacked a two-run homer off Venezuelan starter Luis Colombo with a line drive to right field to give Canada the lead.

In the top of the third Venezuela make it a one-run ballgame, when Jorge Lima singled in Herwims Querales with a strong line to third base.

However, McCullough only allowed 1 more hit to the South American champions, a double in the six off the bat of Lima. But the right-handed pitcher fanned Carlos Carreño for the second out and Lima was caught stealing third base.

This was the last scoring opportunity for Venezuela in the game.

Argentina tops Cuba

Argentina scored three runs in the first two innings of play to clinch an important victory, 3-2, over Cuba. The Argentine team improves to 4-1 in the second place of Group A, in a great position for the last two days of the round robin. Cuba is now 3-2.

Argentina jumped ahead with an RBI single by Santiago Carril to plate Teo Migliavacca. One inning later added two more in the second with RBI singles by Migliavacca and Mariano Montero to make it 3-0.

In the top of the fifth Cuba reduced the gap to the minimum. With two outs and a runner on first Yuri Rodriguez hit a hard grounder to shortstop and Gonzalo Ojeda couldn’t glove it, leaving runners in third and second for Yesander Rodriguez, who hit a double down the first base line to put the score 3-2.

Juan Potolicchio started the game for the South American team and lasted 3.1 innings, with 3 Ks, 2 base on balls and 2 hits. Huemul Mata won the game in relief, fanning 7 and allowing 4 hits and 2 runs.

Cuban starter Alain Roman threw 3 innings, and surrendered 8 hits and 3 runs, with 2 strikeouts.
