Czech Republic: New men's, women's national softball champions crowned

The Czech Softball Association crowned the top softball teams in the country, as the men's and women's Extraliga championships concluded this past Sunday.

The Hippos Havlickuv Brod won the Czech men’s softball championship, sweeping the Beavers Chomutov in a best-of-five series, three games to one, to win the 10-team league title on Sunday. In the women’s best-of-three series, Jourds Prague defeated Eagles Prague, 2-0, to clinch the national championship.

Czech Men's National Softball Team ace Michal Holobradek dominated all three games of the men's finals, allowing only three hits and one run, as the Hippos swept the series 4-0, 7-0 and 3-1. It is the Hippos’ third Czech national softball title, after having won back-to-back crowns in 2016 and 2017.

"It was a great season," said Holobradek after the title-clinching win. "It's a title after three years, but a lot of guys are celebrating for the first time.”

Joudrs Prague defeated Eagles Prague 2-0 on Sunday to sweep the Covid-19-reduced three-game championship series, after having won the opener 11-4 on Saturday.

Designated player Eva Rendlova hit a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the final game. "It's a great, amazing feeling. All the more so because maybe it was my last match [in my career]," said Rendlova.

Joudrs has reclaimed the national title, their seventh overall, after three consecutive titles by Žraloci Ledenice.

The Central European country opened its 10-team Czech Men’s Softball 'Extraliga' on 6 June, while the 8-team Czech Women’s Softball Extraliga opening day was on 13 June.
