Italy to open baseball, softball seasons on 14 June

The reduced schedules of the top divisions allow some flexibility and the start could be pushed until 12 July. No decision yet about whether fans will be allowed in the ballparks.

The Italian Baseball and Softball Federation (FIBS) announced that the 2020 season will open on 14 June. There's no indication whether the season will start behind closed doors. An official release stated that "FIBS will follow the directives of the Government and the Health Authority".

Italy's top baseball and softball divisions, which feature 10 teams respectively, will be split into two groups. The regular seasons will end between 8 and 15 August and be followed by the playoffs, which will be contested between the top two finishers of each group.

The reduced schedules will allow some flexibility. FIBS will have the chance to push the opening of the season until 12 July, if the COVID-19 outbreak requires it.

FIBS said federation president Andrea Marcon will attend the third-division games between baseball clubs Codogno and Piacenza, two of the cities hit the hardest during the COVID-19 pandemic.
