World No. 2 Japan came from behind today to claim the 7th Women’s Softball East Asian Championship, played in Nantou City, Taiwan. The champions had to win two games today to clinch the title. The event was broadcasted and live streamed by Fox Sports.
Japan defeated No. 5 Chinese Taipei in the final, 7-3, and crowned champions of the East Asian Championship. A five-run, third inning proved to be the key of the game, as the Japanese team rallied to score five runs to take a commanding 5-0 lead over Chinese Taipei. Hasegawa Suzuka earned the win for the champions.
Before, in the bronze medal game, the Japanese team defeated No. 23 South Korea by a score of 3-0 to advance to the final. Yoshii Asaka pitched the complete game shutout, while Rio Sugimoto hit a solo shot in the first inning.
Japan advanced to playoffs undefeated with four consecutive wins, but yesterday was surprised by Chinese Taipei, with a 1-0 victory, sending Japan to the bronze medal game. In the other playoff game, South Korea eliminated China, with another thrilling 1-0 game.
Japan, Chinese Taipei and China will be present in the WBSC Women’s Softball World Championship to be played in Chiba, Japan, from 2-12 August.
