Baseball and softball are among the sports being played at the inaugural Junior Pan Am Games.

Baseball and softball are part of the first-ever Junior Pan American Games.

The softball competition at the Junior Pan Am Games Cali 2021 opened this weekend with the first two days of the group stage. The U-18 women’s national teams of No. 2 USA, No. 30 Peru, No. 32 Argentina and No. 40 Colombia are competing in Group A, while No. 4 Mexico, No. 5 Puerto Rico, No. 11 Venezuela and No. 14 Brazil are battling in Group B.

In Group A, USA won their first two matches (against Argentina, 9-0, and Colombia, 29-0) to clinch a spot in the Super Round. Peru defeated Colombia on opening day, 10-0, but lost to Argentina on Sunday, 4-3 in extra innings. On Monday, Argentina will try to secure their place in the Super Round against Colombia, while USA aims to clinch the top position in the group facing Peru.

In Group B, Mexico and Puerto Rico won their first two games against Venezuela and Brazil, respectively, and have booked their tickets into the Super Round. On Monday, they will face each other, in a game that be credited to their Super Round record.

The Super Round will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the medal games scheduled for Thursday, 2 November.

USA, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Peru and Colombia will open in less than a week their participation in the WBSC U-18 Women’s Softball World Cup, to be staged in Lima, Peru, from 6-12 December.

Baseball competition

The group stage of the Junior Pan American Games baseball event will also finish on Monday. In Group A, the Dominican Republic secured the top spot in the standings with a pair of wins over Argentina and Colombia. The two South American nations will collide today with the second place -and a Super Round spot- at stake.

In Group B, Venezuela remains undefeated after two games, with one-run wins over Nicaragua, 6-5, and Brazil, 5-4. Cuba and Nicaragua march in second place, with 1-1 record. The Nicaraguan team defeated the team from the island on Sunday, 3-2, and aims to secure a Super Round spot in the final day against Brazil. Cuba and Venezuela will close the group stage.
