Leon wins Nicaraguan baseball Major 'A' National Championship

Veteran starter Norman Lopez starred while Arnol Rizo and Gerardo Chevez batted in the two runs to help lead Leon to the national championship in the Central American country.

Malpaisillo, representing the city of León, went undefeated to win the Campeonato Nacional de Béisbol Mayor A (Major National Championship 'A') in Nicaragua. In the final, Leon defeated Managua, 2-0.

It was the second title for Leon, after having won their first national championship back in 2010.

Veteran starting pitcher Norman López (pictured above) went the distance and earned the win, allowing only five hits, while striking out six.

López, a 36-year old who played professional baseball in the Philadelphia Phillies organization, told the press that winning this championship made him "emotional".

Center-fielder Arnol Rizo, who made the All-World Team at the WBSC U-21 Baseball World Cup 2014, knocked in a run, while teammate Geraldo Chevez belted a solo home run to power Leon.

The next Campeonato Nacional de Béisbol Mayor A will be held in Villa El Carmen, a municipality in the Managua department.
