Liam Carroll retires as Great Britain baseball national team manager

Carroll, who has been involved with Great Britain’s national team program since 2004, decided to step down from his managerial role after a six-year stint at the head of the senior national team.

Liam Carroll has announced his resignation as the manager of Great Britain's National Baseball Team. Carroll had been a permanent presence on the British national teams coaching staff for 17 years, following his playing career on the GB National Team.

"Representing Great Britain has been the greatest honour," said Carroll. "From the first time I was selected to play in 1996 all the way to managing the 2019 European Championship squad and preparing for the what-if 2021 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, I have given the programme my very best.

"I am incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved and how we’ve grown, especially while having had the privilege to be the caretaker of the senior age group over the last few years.”

Carroll joined the Great Britain coaching staff in 2004, coaching third base and running the offence for the U-18 National Team. He remained on the staff through 2006 as an assistant, before being named Head Coach in 2008. He returned to work with the U-18s in 2010 and 2012, when he took the job as the U-23 manager.

Carroll was announced as manager of the senior national team in early 2015. The Men's National Team competed in September 2016 at the World Baseball Classic Qualifier in Brooklyn, New York. Carroll’s squad finished with a 2-2 record and qualified for the tournament championship game. Two losses to Israel was the difference, as Team GB won big against Pakistan, 14-0, and pulled off a thrilling 4-3 victory over Brazil to set up a re-match with Israel in the final.
