Lima 2019 Pan American Games officially opened the softball stadium at Villa María del Triunfo Sports Complex in the Peruvian capital. This is the fifth venue inaugurated in the complex, including the baseball stadium, presented back in March.

Six nations will be playing at the brand new stadium during the Pan American Games, both in women’s and men’s categories. Men’s softball will be played from 25 July to 1 August, with the participation of Argentina, Cuba, Mexico, host Peru, United States and Venezuela. The women’s competition will be staged from 3-10 August, with Canada, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, United States and Venezuela battling for the Gold Medal.

Vanessa Endo, President of the Peruvian Softball Federation, joined Wilhelm Funcke, Lima 2019 Project and Infrastructure Manager, and Lima 2019 Sports Director, Gustavo San Martin.

“It’s a great pleasure for Lima 2019 to participate in this event. All softball fans had a smile on their faces. Hopefully, this sport will grow quickly, and it will help young people from nearby communities, such as the children who attended the event today, to get closer to softball,” stated Funcke.

After the ceremony, the Peruvian Men’s Softball National Team held a training session at the new stadium.

The Pan American Games are one of the biggest multi-sport events in the world, behind the Olympic Games. A total of 6,680 athletes from 41 countries will participate in 39 sports and 62 disciplines from 26 July to 11 August.
