Luz Alicia Gordoa Osuna made history. On Tuesday, 15 May, she became the first female umpire of the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol (LMB), the professional baseball league rated AAA by Minor League Baseball in the USA.
“It is a great honour” commented Gordoa “Baseball is no more a sport only for men”.
Luz Gordoa was the third base umpire of a crew headed by Alan Izaguirre and that included also Edgar Huerta at first and Erwin Zambrano at second. The Guerreros de Oaxaca defeated, 5-3, the Mexico City Diablos Rojos on their home turf at Fray Nano stadium. Former MLB Cuban slugger Yuniesky Betancourt connected for a key 2 run home run.
A single mother at age 41, Alicia Gordoa was born in the Mexican State of Sinaloa. She was also a softball umpire and a youth soccer referee.
“Now that I made my debut, I look forward to a long career. I want to umpire until my body supports me. This needs to be a full time job and requires constant professional updates” said Gordoa Osuna on a final note.
