Manager Mike Scioscia finalizes USA coaching staff for WBSC Olympic qualifier
Jerry Weinstein, Dave Wallace, Ernie Young, Darren Fenster and Roly de Armas bring a combined 19 years of playing and coaching experience with the US National Team.

USA Baseball National Team manager Mike Scioscia has finalized his coaching staff for the WBSC Americas Qualifier for the Tokyo 2020 Games.

Jerry Weinstein will serve as the bench coach. The staff also includes Dave Wallace (pitching coach), Ernie Young (hitting and first base coach), Darren Fenster (third base coach) and Roly de Armas (bullpen coach).

Combined, the 2021 staff brings 19 years of playing and coaching experience with Team USA to this year’s Professional National Team, having won five gold medals and five silver medals in their time representing the U.S. Additionally, Young was a member of the gold medal-winning team at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

USA will face some stiff competition in the Olympic qualifier. The eight participating nations in the 31 May to 5 June WBSC Baseball Americas Qualifier in St. Lucie County and West Palm Beach, Florida, include:

Group A: No. 2 USA, No. 10 Dominican Republic, No. 11 Puerto Rico and No. 15 Nicaragua.
Group B: No. 8 Cuba, No. 9 Venezuela, No. 13 Canada and No. 14 Colombia.

"I am pleased to welcome Roly de Armas, Darren Fenster, Dave Wallace, Jerry Weinstein, and Ernie Young to the coaching staff," said Scioscia. "The value experience brings to a team cannot be overstated, and we have assembled a coaching staff laden with it. Olympic qualifying is unique, so to have three coaches on staff who have been through this process before in Ernie, Jerry, and Roly is invaluable. With that said, the entire coaching staff collectively brings over 100 years of coaching practice to the table, and I am thrilled to work with them as we set our sights on the Tokyo Olympic Games."

Weinstein was on the US coaching staff in the Olympics in Barcelona in 1992 and Atlanta in 1996. He managed Israel at the World Baseball Classic 2017.

Wallace is a USA Baseball rookie but has extensive experience as a pitching coach at the Major League Baseball (MLB) level.

De Armas served as the US bullpen coach in the Beijing 2008 Olympics and helped win two IBAF World Cups (2007, 2009). He was on the staff also at the WBSC Premier12 2015.
