Meet Lima, Peru: Home of the inaugural WBSC U-18 Women's Softball World Cup

Starting on December 6th, Lima will host the the nine-nation tournament that will crown the best in the world in the category.

Lima will host the WBSC U-18 Women's Softball World Cup, where nine nations: United States, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Chinese Taipei, Netherlands, Czech Republic, South Africa, Colombia and host Peru will compete for the title of World Champion in the 18-and-under category. The global tournament is set to open on December 6th.

The tournament, the first-ever WBSC event hosted in Peru, will be played at Villa Maria del Triunfo Softball Stadium, one of the sites of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.

The capital of Peru was founded on January 18 of 1535 by Francisco Pizarro. It is also known as the City of the Kings (Ciudad de los Reyes) and Pacific’s Pearl (Perla del Pacífico). It's one of the largest cities in the Americas, with a population of around 10 million people.

Lima is the home of one the oldest institutions of higher learning in the Americas, the National University of San Marcos, which was founded in 1551.

Some of the relevant personalities who were born in Lima include film director Claudia Llosa, fashion photographer Mario Testino, international chef Gaston Acurio, opera singer Juan Diego Flores and the former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Javier Perez de Cuellar.

The historic centre of Lima, one of the top tourist destinations in Peru, is well known for its balconies and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.

Other interesting places in Lima are the Rimac District with testimonies of Prehispanic Life, Pueblo Libre District known as Liberators Village (Villa de los Libertadores) because of the important figures who lived there during the independence of the country. The San Isidro District is well known for being the business centre of the city and also offers a wide gastronomic selection and Miraflores district is one of the most important commercial and residential neighborhoods in the city.

Lima, which is one of the most important tourist destinations on the continent, will be for 10 days this December the Softball Capital of the World.
