GUADALAJARA, Mexico – After disappointing results in
their Group A openers, Netherlands (0-1) and the Dominican Republic (0-1) will
look to bounce back in their second game of the 2019 WBSC Premier12 in Guadalajara.
No. 8 ranked Netherlands will send former big leaguer Jair Jurrjens to the mound to get their tournament back on track against the no. 12 ranked Dominican Republic tomorrow. Jurrjens was an MLB All-Star in 2011 and holds a 3.72 ERA in 130 big league appearances.
Jurrjens will go head-to-head with Dominican legend Ervin
Santana. Santana – a two-time MLB All-Star – has made 384 starts at the MLB
level, and has 15 years of big league experience.
Santana has never represented the Dominican Republic at a
World Baseball Classic or Premier12 level.
The Netherlands struggled against USA in their tournament
opener, falling 9-0. Starting pitcher Rob Cordemans struggled to find his
rhythm after giving up a home run from the first pitch of the ballgame.
Cordemans surrendered a run in the second and third inning before being relieved
by Lars Huijer.
Sharlon Schoop and Hendrik Clementina were the only Dutch
players to claim hits on the day.
Dominican Republic scored in the top of the first inning
thanks to a Carlos Peguero RBI, but failed to restrict Mexico in a
rain-affected contest.
Despite striking out 10 in 4.1 innings of work, Dominican
starter Enny Romero was tagged with the loss after giving up a third-inning grand
slam to Mexican infielder Esteban Quiroz.
Geraldo Perdomo went 2-for-3 leading off the Dominican batting
order, but it was not enough as Mexico finished with a 6-1 win.
First pitch of the Group A contest is slated for 12.00pm
local time.
