Nine out of 10 Canadians passionate about baseball, survey finds

It's the result of a survey conducted by IMI International for the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

Nine out of 10 Canadians are "passionate" about baseball, according to a recent survey. The exact figure was 91%.

The Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum through IMI International polled 904 adults across Canada from 18 to 30 June to offer a perspective on what Canadians love about the Old Game.

“The work from the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in polling a segment of the national baseball audience provided an informative and fun look at our sport through the eyes of Canadian baseball fans," commented Jim Baba, Baseball Canada Executive Director. "After sifting through the data it is apparent that respondents care about the game, are passionate about the game and are interested in seeing it grow so that more and more Canadians can experience this wonderful sport."

"At the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, our mission is to champion education, respect, diversity and healthy lifestyles across generations through the power of baseball," said Jeremy Diamond, Chair of the Canadian Hall of Fame Board Of Directors. "The survey provides some interesting insights into baseball in Canada we hope it sparks further conversations. Like all fans of baseball, we are excited to see baseball return!"

The results of the survey show that the Toronto Blue Jays are Canada's Major League Baseball (MLB) team, since 81% of respondents chose them as their favourite. The Detroit Tigers were a distant second. Russell Martin was voted the top Canadian-born Blue Jay ever.

The respondents also chose Field of Dreams as their favourite baseball movie ahead of Bull Durham and Moneyball. A League of Their Own and Major League tied for fourth.
