Oh, Canada. Host remains undefeated after crazy Win

Edmonton (Canada). It was the most thrilling and dramatic game so far at the V IBAF Women’s Baseball World Cup. Canada blew a huge lead in the seventh inning of their highly anticipated matchup against the United States, but still ended up with a fourth win in as many games, as the pitching of the two-time world champion imploded in the first extra inning. The host now sits at the top of the standings, looking to reach the semi-finals as the number-one seed.

The other three games on Monday in Edmonton also didn’t lack any drama. Australia had to fight hard, to prevail by two runs against a strong Dutch squad, which had a lead for the first time in the tournament. Chinese Tapei moved into a tie with the USA, beating Venezuela for their third win. Defending world champion Japan shut out Cuba in the morning.

Four games are also scheduled for Tuesday. An international baseball rivalry will add another chapter at John Fry Park, when the USA faces Cuba. At Telus Field Australia meets with Venezuela in the morning. In the afternoon Japan will square off with Chinese Taipei in an all-Asian matchup. In the evening the Netherlands will try to challenge Canada under the lights. Japan 10 – Cuba 0

Japan rebounded from Sunday’s loss to Team USA with a 10-0 shutout to open day four in Edmonton, Canada. On Monday morning at Telus Field the defending world baseball champion scored four runs in the first and in four of the five innings en route to a ten-run rule shortened victory. For Cuba it was the fourth loss in the fourth game. Yukari Isozaki faced just 19 batters, allowing just four hits and a walk in five scoreless innings, pitching a complete game.

Chinese Taipei 4 – Venezuela 2

Chinese Taipei made a big step towards the medal round on Monday afternoon at John Fry Park. They downed Venezuela by a score of 4-2, picking up their third win in the fourth game in the tournament. The South Americans dropped to 1-2 in a matchup of contenders for the possible fourth berth in the semi-finals. Chi Tseng’s two-run single in the third turned out tob e crucial for the victory.

Australia 13 – Netherlands 11

Australia’s Women’s Baseball National Team barely avoided an upset against the Netherlands, winning 13-11 in a thrilling slugfest at Telus Field in Edmonton, Canada on Monday afternoon. The team from Down Under came back from a 2-6 deficit, but nearly blew a 13-6 lead in the seventh en route to the victory. They are now 2-2 and keep their chances intact to reach the semi-finals. The Netherlands dropped to 0-4, but showed an impressive offensive performance. Shae Lillywhite and Christina Kreppold scored seven of the 13 Australian runs. Kirsten Vierdag collected two hits and three RBI for the underdog from Europe.

USA 9 – Canada 15

After a dramatic ending Canada downed Team USA 15-9 on Monday evening at Telus Field in Edmonton. They survived as the lone undefeated team in the V IBAF Women’s Baseball World Cup. The host of the tournament blew an 8-1 lead in the seventh inning, as the US scored seven in the bottom half to force extra innings. However profiting of wild pitching as well Canada answered with seven runs in the top half of the eighth, deciding the outcome.
