Ping Cheng team wins CTBA High School Championship tournament

The Elite High School Championship tournament, organized by CTBA (Chinese Taipei Baseball Association) concluded two weeks of competition this past weekend.

In the finale at Hsinchuang Stadium, Ping Cheng High School of Taoyuan County defeated defending champions Ku Pao Commercial High 8-1 to capture the title for the first time.

It was scoreless after three innings but wheels fell off for the powerhouse Ku Pao Commercial High in the 4th frame when one fielding error led to another, with booted balls and wild throws, to gift the opposition 7 runs.

Ping Cheng High School got another run in the next inning, while Ku Pao replied with one run in the 6th frame to complete the 8-1 scoreline.

Starting pitcher Sheng Rong-Hong for Ping Cheng High went the distance for the victory, giving up only one run on four hits while striking out four.

Sheng was voted the tournament MVP for his outstanding efforts, as the RHP won three games with an overall ERA of 0.51, and attracting much interest from foreign scouts.

This CTBA spring tourney started with top 35 high school teams from around Taiwan, with games taking place in Taoyuan, Taipei Tienmu, and New Taipei City.
