Puerto Rico beats Mexico, claims WBSC U-18 Women’s Softball World Cup bronze medal

Brianna Roberts allowed one hit in seven innings to pitch her team to the bronze medal.

Brianna Roberts shined in today’s Bronze Medal Game at the WBSC U-18 Women’s Softball World Cup, to lead Puerto Rico to its third bronze medal in the team’s history. Esperanza Coe produced three of the four Puerto Rican runs.

The Caribbean squad scored twice in the fourth and two more in the fifth to support their pitcher and secure the win. In the fourth, Coe drove in Janelle Martinez with an RBI single to put her team in front. A few moments later, Kairi Rodriguez crossed the plate after a passed ball.

One inning later, Puerto Rico’s designated player Coe delivered a single to the left field to plate Aminah Vega and Rodriguez, giving her team a more comfortable advantage.

Roberts pitched seven innings of one-hit ball, giving up two walks with six strikeouts.

It’s Puerto Rico’s third bronze medal in the history of the junior women’s softball world championships. They won back to back medals in 2015 and 2017. For Mexico, the fourth place is the nation’s best position at this level.
