Puerto Rico’s Alvelo, Dung, Ocasio combine for perfection; Cuba defeats Bahamas in four

Taran Alvelo, Xeana Dung and Aleshia Ocasio combined to pitch a five-inning perfect game for Puerto Rico, leading the team to a 13-0 win over Guatemala in the second day of competition.

Puerto Rican staff fanned 11 of the 15 batters they faced. Offensively, Puerto Rico hit five home runs, three of them in a 7-run fifth inning.

Alvelo took the ball to open the game for Puerto Rico and used 19 pitches to retire the six first hitters from Guatemala; 16 of her pitches were strikes. She struck out 4 opponents.

Dung pitched the third and four episodes with 5 Ks, and Ocasio used 11 pitches in the fifth to close the game, with a grounder and 2 strikeouts.

Tomorrow Puerto Rico will take on Bahamas at 8:30 p.m., while Guatemala will play against host Canada, at 6 p.m.

Cuba earns first win of the tournament

A 6-hit, 9-run first inning sealed the win for Cuba in the last game of the day at Softball City. The Cuban team defeated Bahamas, 13-0, in four innings and evened its record 1-1.

After a tough loss yesterday to start the tournament, Cuba rebounded today with a comfortable win. Bahamas’ starter Brendia Ferguson faced 8 hitters but couldn’t retire an out. She surrendered 5 hits and 8 runs and was charged with the loss.

Cuba added one more run in the second episode with an RBI double by Leanneyi Gomez, and three in the third with singles by Maidelis Reyes and Yilian Rondon.

Bahamas will play the third game of the tournament against Puerto Rico, while Cuba has the day off on Tuesday.
