Puerto Rico's Double-A Baseball League to open on 16 May

The 2020 season was cancelled amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

The Puerto Rican Baseball Federation (FBAPR, Federación de Béisbol Aficionado de Puerto Rico) has agreed on a new tentative date for the start of the 2021 season of the semi-pro Superior Double-A league. FBAPR President José Quiles Rosas indicated 16 May as the possible Opening Day.

"We'll be forced to play a shortened regular season," stated Quiles through a press release. "We need to come to terms with the managing of the COVID-19 pandemic."

The Superior Double-A league involves 42 participating clubs. After a 12-game regular season, clubs will compete in the semifinals and finals in the different Divisions (best-of-five series). The qualified teams will face each other in round-robin play at the Carnival of Champions. A national best-of-five semifinal will follow and the winner will compete in a best-of-seven championship series.

"Our goal is to open the 2021 season with ballparks open to fans," Quiles added.

The FBAPR Executive Board will meet again on 16 February. A general meeting of the 42 clubs is scheduled on 28 February.
