The world of baseball is mourning the death of Roy Halladay, one of the top pitchers of his generation. On Tuesday afternoon Halladay was piloting an ICON A5 that crashed into the gulf of Mexico. He was 40 years old and leaves behind his wife, Brandy, and two children, Braden and Ryan.
MLB websited remembered Halladay as “Your favorite player’s favorite player”. Tributes to Halladay literally poured in on social media. Former Philly Chase Utley had the most touching line: “He was the ultimate teammate with a passion for being the best”.
Harry Leroy Halladay was born in Denver (Colorado) in 1977 and drafted out of High School by the Toronto Blue Jays in 1995. On 20 September 1998 he made his Major League debut. He was 2 outs shy of a no hitter in his second MLB start. He then pitched a perfect game and a post season no hitter during the 2010 season, his first with the Philadelphia Phillies. That year he deserved his second Cy Young Award. The first one had come in 2003 in a Toronto Blue Jays uniform.
Halladay was nicknamed Doc by Blue Jays announcer Tom Cheeck in reference to Wild West gunslinger Doc Holliday. He retired at the end of the 2013 season.
