IWAKI, Japan – Iwaki City will begin serving WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup 2016-themed school lunches across all municipal elementary and junior high schools in the host city.

The promotional “Cheer Lunches” — which feature glove-shaped bread and the Official Look of the WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup 2016 on food packaging — will be provided not only to students but also to faculty and Parent Teacher Association (PTA) officials.

Iwaki City officials stated the lunches will provide an “early taste of the U-15 World Cup”.

Iwaki’s ingenious idea made headlines online via Yahoo! Japan, which featured the U-15 Baseball World Cup-branded lunch story to its readership of 44 million.

The City of Iwaki, under Mayor Toshio Shimizu, has been carrying out many U-15 Baseball World Cup 2016 promotional and rebuilding activities to connect with and serve the local community, as the region was devastated by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.

The city recently completed installing a US$ 2.3 million (254,000,000 JPY) synthetic turf in Nambu Stadium, one of three stadiums hosting #U15WorldCup matches.

The city also has plans to announce a WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup 2016 menu with selections from all 12 participation nations.

The third edition of the U-15 Baseball World Cup, which is the highest level international baseball competition for players 13 to 15-years-old, will be staged in Iwaki City from 29 July to 7 August.
