SEA Games: Philippines clinch men, women's softball round-robin

The host team and Indonesia lead undefeated the baseball event

The Philippines ended the round robin phase of the women and men’s softball competitions undefeated and have already secured a medal at the 30th SEA Games. The host nation and Indonesia remain undefeated in the baseball event

With only one game left to complete the women’s softball competition round robin, the Philippines clinched first place after a four-inning, 11-0 victory over Thailand. The host team finished with 4-0 record at the top of the standings.

Malaysia and Singapore will play on Thursday for second place in the round robin, finishing a postponed game from Tuesday. Both teams defeated Indonesia on Wednesday to remain in the hunt for second place: Malaysia earned their second win of the tournament with a 5-3 victory over the Indonesian squad; while Singapore beat Indonesia by a narrow 1-0 margin.

The standings see the Philippines on top (4-0), followed by Malaysia and Singapore (2-1), Indonesia (1-3) and Thailand (0-4) who have not made the playoffs.

The Philippines also clinched first place in the opening round in the men’s softball competition. On Wednesday, the host team beat Singapore 8-0 and finished the round robin undefeated after three games. Indonesia beat Thailand by a score of 7-0 and finished the round robin with a 1-2 record. They must wait until Thursday’s game between Singapore and Thailand to know their final position in the round robin. A win by Singapore would send them to the second place, sending Indonesia to third. However, a victory by Thailand would generate a triple tie.

The baseball event completed its third day of competition on Wednesday with two games. Indonesia defeated Cambodia by a score of 8-1, while the Philippines were too good for Singapore, 17-0. With these scores, the Philippines lead the standings (3-0), while Indonesia is also undefeated after two games. Thailand is third (1-1), while Cambodia (0-2) and Thailand (0-3) remain winless in the tournament.
