In a South American matchup, Brazil claimed the win against Peru, 5-0, in the second day of the WBSC Softball Americas Qualifier. Camila Silva and Fernanda Shiroma combined for a seven-inning shutout, with a total of 7 strikeouts.
Peru had a good chance to score in the second inning when Elizabeth Caffero and Giovannah Webb hit back-to-back singles to start the episode, but Silva found the way to escape the jam. Fernanda Ocrospoma hit a grounder to second base to leave runners in the corners, Alessandra La Puente grounded to third base, and finally, Silva struck out Betsey Ramos to hang the zero.
One inning later Brazil took the lead. Gabriela Dos Santos hit a bloop single behind second base to lead off the inning, while Mariana Ribeiro and Barbara Wall drew consecutive walks to load the bases with no outs. One out later Leticia Yoshie showed a bunt, the pitcher and first baseman charged the play while the second baseman moved to cover first, but Yoshie dragged a slap bunt to second base, where nobody was covering, allowing Ribeiro and Wall to score from third and second respectively.
In the seventh inning, Brazil scored three runs to put the game out of reach for their South American rivals. With two runners on, Dos Santos hit a hard grounder to second base that Ramos couldn’t glove, allowing Viera and Laudino to score. Then Ribeiro drove in the last run of the game, with an RBI single to right field.
Brazilian pitchers Silva and Shiroma were brilliant, combining for the shutout. The left-handed starter pitched 4.2 innings allowing only 3 hits and 1 walk, with 5 strikeouts and took the win. In relief Shiroma fanned 2 in 2.1 episodes, allowing only 1 hit.
On the other hand, Peruvian Meiber Cabrera pitched really well during the game. She went the distance, surrendering 7 hits and 5 runs (only 2 earned) with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts.
Tomorrow Brazil will play Venezuela at 3:30 p.m. and Peru will face Dominican Republic at 7:30 p.m.
