Softball Australia names David Metekingi as new U-23 National Team head coach

Metekingi served as an Assistant Coach for the Aussie U-18 Men’s Softball World Cup 2020 team that earned a silver medal in Palmerston North, New Zealand.

Softball Australia has announced the hiring of David Metekingi as the Head Coach of the newly established Aussie U-23 Men’s National Team.

The move comes after WBSC announced plans to launch the Softball World Cup in the respective category.

Australia, the most decorated junior softball program in the world, with five world championships, is expected to be one of the top contenders for the U-23 world crown.

Metekingi served as an Assistant Coach for the Aussie squad that earned a silver medal at the WBSC U-18 Men’s Softball World Cup 2020 in Palmerston North, New Zealand.

Metekingi will use the Australian U-23 Men’s National Championship later this year, scheduled for 16–22 December 2020, as a major platform from which to select players and build his squad.

As a player, Metekingi was a member of Australia's Men's National Softball Team from 2004 to 2010, and part of the World Championship winning team in 2009.

The WBSC is launching the new U-23 age bracket for men’s softball, aiming to bridge the gap between the U-18 and senior events. The inaugural WBSC U-23 Men’s World Cup will be held in 2021 with final dates and venues to be announced.
