After a huge success in the organisation of the World Baseball Softball Confederation Congress last year, and a historic performance by its National Team in the 2017 WBSC Men’s Softball World Championship, the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) has received a raise in its budget for 2018, according to leading national newspaper MMEGI.
The BNSC is the government’s arm of extending resources to various sports Associations and Federations through the Ministry Of Youth Empowerment Sport and Culture Development (MYESC), and its objective is to promote Sport within Botswana and participation of Sport outside the country.
The budget for 2017 was 93 million pulas (9.8 million dollars), including the hosting of various international events like the WBSC Congress. This year, the BNSC will receive 96 million pulas (10.2 million dollars), but with less international events to host, representing a leap of 30 million pulas (3.2 million dollars) in the sports budget.
The WBSC Congress was held last year in Gaborone, Botswana, from 12-14 October, at the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC) by the Botswana Softball Association (BSA), in conjunction with the BNSC. A total of 125 federations from 96 countries were present in the Congress.
Besides, Botswana made a historic run in the 2017 WBSC Men’s Softball World Championship, making the playoffs for the first time in history and ending in the eighth place, the best position ever for the African country in a Softball World Championship.
Botswana Women’s National Team crowned African champion in January this year, and qualified for the 2018 WBSC Women’s Softball World Championship to be held in Chiba, Japan, 2-12 August.
