Sport of softball showcased on newly minted Olympic coin in Australia

The Royal Australian Mint and the Australian Olympic Committee have unveiled the official Tokyo 2020 Australian Team coin collection.

The sport of softball is found on one of the three newly minted Tokyo 2020 commemorative coins released by The Royal Australian Mint. A women’s softball batter is displayed in a new coin that includes the five new sports set to be featured at the Tokyo Olympic Games -- baseball/softball, karate, skateboarding, sports climbing and surfing.

Australia is one of only two nations to have earned a medal in all four Olympic softball competitions. The Aussies claimed a silver medal in Athens 2004, losing 5-1 to USA in the gold medal game. They earned the bronze medal in Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000 and Beijing 2008.

Australia earned the sixth and final slot in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic softball event.

Before The Royal Australian Mint released their Olympic coins, in late 2018 the Japanese Ministry of Finance published their Tokyo 2020 commemorative coin collection, including a 1,000-yen baseball/softball coin.
