Thomas Bach, IOC president who re-opened the door for Olympic baseball/softball, set to be re-elected

The President who admitted baseball/softball in the Tokyo Olympics programme is serving an eight-year first term. His second would run through 2025

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has revealed that current IOC President Thomas Bach will be the sole candidate for the next IOC presidential election, which would extend his presidency, which began in 2013, to 2025.

Through Bach's evolution and modernisation of the Olympic Movement, baseball and softball -- as well as four other new sports -- in 2016 were voted onto the programme of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

“This historic year was only made possible thanks to the International Olympic Committee and its president, Thomas Bach, whose Olympic Agenda 2020 vision has brought innovation, new mechanisms and a new look to the Olympic Programme,” World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) President Riccardo Fraccari said in 2016.

Bach was elected IOC President in 2013 after two terms as Vice President. He is currently serving an eight-year first term that will expire after the Summer Olympics. His second term would run through 2025.

He is a former Olympic (Montreal 1976) and World Champion (1976, 1977) in fencing, with the German men's foil team.
