Tokyo 2020 Olympics: Mexican National Team looking for ways to keep players active with LMB season cancelled

The list includes 100 players, most of them under contract with teams of the Mexican Baseball League (LMB), that recently cancelled its 2020 season.

Mexico's National Teams Committee is looking for a way to keep the 100 players on the pre-selection for the Olympic team active following the cancellation of the summer professional league (LMB, Liga Mexicana de Béisbol).

The National Teams Committee combines the expertise of the professional leagues (LMB and LMP, Liga Mexicana del Pacifico), the Office of the President for the Promotion of Baseball (PROBEIS) and the Mexican Baseball Federation (FEMEBE, Federación Mexicana de Béisbol).

“We hope we can meet this month with LMB leadership," said Kundy Gutierrez, the general manager of the Mexican Baseball National Team, to the press agency EFE.

"We are seeking authorization to speak with the club owners, in order to devise a plan for the players. We want to focus on the physical part so that the players stay in shape."

Gutierrez, a 41-year old Mexican-American who has held the position since 2015 after serving in the construction business, is working together with Juan Gabriel Castro, the skipper of the team that earned an Olympic spot through the WBSC Premier12 2019.

Players may find a chance to compete overseas during the summer, either in Asia or Europe. Gutierrez and Castro are also focused on the fall.

"We want our players to compete in Winter Leagues," added Kundy Gutierrez. "The LMP for sure, but also other Mexican circuits such as the Veracruz League or other leagues in Latin America."

On a final note, Gutierrez said: "We will approach the Major League Baseball (MLB) international department to request authorization to speak with the teams that have players under contract on our [Olympic] pre-selection [roster]."
