U-12 Baseball World Cup placement round Day 1

Australia earned the first win in the tournament, the Czech Republic defeated Italy in the all-European matchup and is still in play for seventh place. The USA scored 22 runs in one at-bat, 28 total against Fiji

Australia, the Czech Republic and the USA won in the U-12 Baseball World Cup placement round day 1.
On Thursday, 2 August, the Czechs will play what looks like an elimination game for seventh place against the USA.

The Czech Republic remains in play for seventh place with an 8-1 win against Italy.
Despite not striking out a batter, starter Michal Cajz shut out the Azzurri for 4.2 innings. Italy’s only run came, unearned, against reliever Filip Hedl in the bottom of the sixth.

The Czech Republic took an early lead against Italy’s starter Filippo Sabatini and didn’t need to look back. Cajz himself batted in the go-ahead run. The second run came on a defensive error.

The Czech Republic opened the score with a four-run fifth at-bat against reliever Riccardo Mazzanti.

Czech third baseman and leadoff hitter Max Prejda went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and was the best hitter of the game.

In placement round day 1, Australia earned the first win in the tournament as they defeated, 7-4, South Africa. Riley Oliphant pitched 2.1 innings in relief to earn the win.

Australia was quick to get on the scoreboard, with two runs in the first at-bat and added three more in the top of the fourth. Designated hitter Lachlan Vella starred, going 4 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs. Vella got the last two outs as a pitcher and picked up the save. Third baseman Josh Nati also homered. Australia’s lineup outhit South Africa 11 hits to 5.

The USA scored six runs in the first at-bat and a record 22 in the second to beat Fiji, 28-0.
The USA offence thrived on errors and needed only 12 hits.

Jack Armlio and Jayden Stroman limited Fiji offence to one hit.
