Canada wins two, China comes from behind to beat Ireland

Canada played perfect defence behind starting pitcher Ryan

Canada beat the Netherlands, 2-0, playing perfect defence behind some brilliant pitching by Samantha Ryan, who went the distance allowing only two hits and three walks. Canada outhit, 6-2, the Dutch and also prevailed in the running game.

The Netherlands reached third with no one out in the top of the first with left fielder Yindi Beekveldt and again in the top of the sixth with third baseman Marijm Crouwel, who got the only extra-base hit of the game. In both cases, Ryan got out of the jam on strikes. She combined seven strikes out over the course of her effort.

Canada scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth. Catcher Lauren Benson singled, advanced on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a pair of wild pitches by Dutch starter Margot Van Eijl.
The insurance run came thanks to a base hit by first baseman Nicole Rivait against reliever Isanthe Rouwenhorst.

Also, the Netherlands played a clean defensive game, highlighted by a brilliant running catch by Beekveldt in the bottom of the fourth that robbed designated player Alexis Lucyshyn of an extra-base hit.

The game ended with the potential tying runs on base for the Netherlands.

Samantha Ryan went the distance for Canada

Canada went on to defeat later in the day Chinese Taipei, 7-0.
Third baseman Rebecca Jones homered in the top of the second off Chinese Taipei starter, Weng Tzu Ching.

The home run sent Weng to the showers and brought Yu Hsuan Feng to the mound.
The newcomer and Lin Chia Ying, the third pitcher by Chinese Taipei, couldn’t stop Canada’s offence, that combined ten hits and cruised to the second win of the day.

Alexis Lucyshyn allowed only two hits to Chinese Taipei in four innings of work and earned the win.

Rebecca Jones welcomed home after her home run

China scored seven in the bottom of the fifth to beat, 8-3, Ireland. The absolute beginners of the U-19 Women’s Softball World Cup entered the frame with a two-run lead, but couldn’t stick to it because of a couple of questionable defensive plays.

Trailing 1-0, Ireland took the lead in the top of the third. With one out and a runner on, China’s starter Chai Yinan allowed back to back walks and loaded the bases. Irish shortstop Fiona Girardot made her pay with a triple to the gap in left centre that cleared the bases.

The bottom of the fifth was the turning point of the game. With runners at first and second and one out, Irish second baseman Bridget Keary couldn’t get to a chopper by China’s shortstop Lu Xiaomin. The ball went all the way to the fence for a two-RBI triple that tied the game. Another ground ball got by centre fielder Wang Yuan got by the shortstop and China followed with a pair of base hits. Reliever Madison Leonard couldn’t stop the bleeding and China opened the score with seven runs.

The five-run lead allowed Chai Yinan to cruise to the end of the game and earn the win.
