The games of the placement round of the U-19 Women’s Softball World Cup got started in Irvine, California. This is a full report of what happened during placement round Day 1.

New Zealand scored two runs in the bottom of the third against starter Alissa Usami.
Star shortstop Caitlyn Lewin doubled and designated player Pearl Waetford singled to put the Junior White Sox ahead.
New Zealand didn’t need to look back and went on to beat Brazil 3-2 in the first game for placement 9-12.

Brittany Terrey earned the win allowing only one earned run on four hits.

A four-run third at-bat helped the Czech Republic defeat Italy, 6-0, and make a huge step towards the ninth place.

Kopicova, Simunkova and Saviola got to Italian starter Chiara Ruscon with base hits and gave the Czech Republic the lead.

The Czechs never needed to look back. Starter Anna Stenglova pitched a complete game shut out, allowing only four hits and one walk while striking out five.

South Africa placement round Day 1

 

South Africa scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat Botswana, 8-7, in the first game played for placement 13 to 16.
Left fielder Itumelong Moreroa went 3 for 4 and first baseman Elri Herman went 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
Chesterney Fortune pitched four innings in relief, allowing only two hits and one ball for the ball.
Wame Odorile went the distance for Botswana but suffered the loss.

The Netherlands used a defensive error to score for the first time in the tournament and went on to beat, 6-0, Ireland and collect the first win. Catcher Tess Remmers went 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

Margot Van Eijl pitched a complete game for the win, allowing five hits and one walk and striking out six.
