USA wins Thriller to highlight Day 2 in Edmonton

Edmonton (Canada). On day two of the V IBAF Women’s Baseball World Cup all eight teams were in competition for the first time. USA won the most thrilling game of the day, coming back against Australia for their second victory. Also Japan and Venezuela entered the tournament. The defending champion from Asia dispatched the Netherlands, while the South Americans lost to the hosts in the evening. Also Chinese Taipei downed Cuba to get into the win column.

Edmonton (Canada). On day two of the V IBAF Women’s Baseball World Cup all eight teams were in competition for the first time. USA won the most thrilling game of the day, coming back against Australia for their second victory. Also Japan and Venezuela entered the tournament. The defending champion from Asia dispatched the Netherlands, while the South Americans lost to the hosts in the evening. Also Chinese Taipei downed Cuba to get into the win column.

Chinese Taipei 6 – Cuba 3

Chinese Taipei opened day two at the tournament with a 6-3 victory over Cuba on Saturday morning at Telus Field in Edmonton. Two runs apiece in the second, fourth and sixth were enough for the Asian team to pick up their first victory in event. Cuba was able to counter the first Taipei-attack, but couldn’t rally in the end. They are now 0-2.

Netherlands 0 – Japan 21

Japan scored a combined 18 runs in two innings en route to an impressive 21-0 shutout in five innings over the Netherlands. 13 different players scored, Tomomi Nishi drove in four. One of five professional players on the team, Mika Konishi started and threw three scoreless frames. Galieth Haaker had two of the five Dutch hits. The lone European squad in the tournament dropped to 0-2.

Australia 8 – USA 11

In the most exciting game so far in the V IBAF Women’s Baseball World Cup Team USA rallied from an early 2-7 deficit to prevail 11-8 against Australia. Tamara Jones tied the game with a two-run single in the sixth. Three runs in the seventh put the game into the books. Australia had scored seven runs off Marti Sementelli in the third, knocking the American starter out of the game. But in the end her teammates bailed her out.

Venezuela 2 – Canada 14

Canada welcomed Venezuela at the V Women’s Baseball World Cup with an impressive ten-run rule shortened 14-2 victory. They scored four runs in the first and blew the score wide open in the fourth and the fifth to end it early. It is the second win for the host at Telus Field in Edmonton, remaining on course for a medal. Venezuela arrived only a few hours before game time and only was able to be a threat in the first.

Notes

The second venue at the tournament, Bob White Field at John Fry Park in south Edmonton, will be in use for the first time….In the evening the two-time women’s baseball world champions USA and Japan will square off at Telus Field….The Edmonton International Baseball Foundation are the local organizers of the event…..Venezuela arrived on Saturday in three groups as the last team in Edmonton, as their flights were delayed due to visa problems.
