Venezuela selects MLB first base coach Carlos Subero to lead National Team at WBSC Premier12

After a Minor League playing career as a middle infielder in the USA, Subero started his coaching tenure in 2001 and has been in the Major Leagues for the last three seasons. He also won the Venezuelan Winter League title with the Caracas Leones

CARACAS, Venezuela — World No. 9 Venezuela named current Milwaukee Brewers first base coach Carlos Subero as manager of the National Team for the WBSC Premier12 2019 this November, which will feature the top 12 nations in the baseball world.

Subero, soon to turn 47, inherits a Venezuelan National Team that didn’t’ make it past the first round of the 2015 Premier12 and finished 8th (of 16) in the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

“I would like to thank the Venezuelan Baseball Federation for naming me as national team manager for the Premier12, where our goal is very clear, to be champion of the tournament – a step leading to the Olympic Games,” said Carlos Subero.

Venezuela will open Premier12 in Group B in Taiwan, with world No. 1 Japan, No. 4 Chinese Taipei and No. 11 Puerto Rico.  The highest finisher in the Premier12 from the Americas will earn a ticket to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Subero’s experience

He was born in Caracas and went to the USA to play in 1990, when he was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball (MLB). He was a middle infielder and played five seasons in affiliated baseball (Royals, Pittsburgh Pirates and Texas Rangers), but never got higher than Class A.

Subero is enjoying a much better career as a coach, earning his first managerial job in 2001 in the Texas Rangers organization.

He also had success in his home country’s professional league, the LVBP, Liga Venezolana de Beisbol Profesional, a WBSC Associate Member.

Former MLB second baseman Carlos Garcia will serve as Subero’s bench coach. Wilfredo Romero, a former player and coach in Venezuela and Mexico, currently working in the San Francisco Giants farm system, will have batting coach duties.

Carlos Subero will succeed Luis Sojo, who is currently the manager of the Spanish National Team.
