USA Baseball announced that Veronica Alvarez will return in 2020 as the manager of the Women's National Baseball Team, the top women's team in the country. Alvarez led world No. 5 USA to an undefeated run in the Pan-American Women's Baseball Championship in 2019.
Alvarez, a catcher in her playing days, represented USA five times in international women's baseball. She was a coach on the 2018 Women's National Team and was named the 2019 USA Baseball Rod Dedeaux Coach of the Year after the winning season. Alvarez became the first woman to earn the honour.
"Veronica and her staff did an outstanding job guiding, teaching and helping our athletes to grow both on and off the field," said USA Baseball Executive Director and CEO Paul Seiler.
The remaining staff is also returning for the 2020 season. Reynol Mendoza will serve as the pitching coach, Manny Crespo Sr and Alex Oglesby will be the assistant coaches.
Veronica Alvarez and her staff will lead the U.S. Women's National Team in the WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup 2020, scheduled from 11 to 20 September in Monterrey, Mexico.
USA Baseball also announced that the 2020 Women’s National Team identification process will begin with the Women’s National Open from July 3-5 at The First Academy in Orlando, Florida. Forty athletes will then be selected from the event and remain in Orlando to compete at the Women’s National Team Trials from July 6-9 for a spot on USA's World Cup roster. The final 20-player roster will be announced following the conclusion of trials.
